Chandra (Bane) - former detective
Not long ago Bane was a crack mage, a partner at Onisan Investigations and human. Back then she was called Chandra, a happy-go-lucky hotshot with a big heart who wasn't afraid to show it.
But she'd always known she'd been born under an evil moon. Chandra figured it was just bad luck the night that vampire jumped her from behind, a quart low and determined to do something about it. As far as endings went, she figured, it could have been worse. Unfortunately, before it was all over Chandra'd been up one side of worse and back down the other, had gotten the t-shirt and was wishing she could have traded in that round-trip ticket for a slow boat to anywhere else.
She wasn't buried long enough to void the return policy. And when she demanded a refund from the graveskeeper he was happy to give it even if she hadn't kept the receipt. Chandra was reborn the vampire Bane, thrust unwillingly into the shadowy world of undead high society where politics, power and intrigue get cautiously stirred in a 120-proof cocktail that's sweet, addictive and, frequently, combustible.
But, unlike most newly-made bloodsuckers, Bane didn't forget her old friends. When Bane lost her capacity to tan, her taste for garlic and her life she also lost her ability to do magic. And when that loss almost destroyed her she clawed her way back to sanity with the help of her old friend Kamrauch.
Now the nightly battle between the memory of her days in the sun and her dark vampire nature is what keeps Bane running. Though she never seems to be able to get too far from home. She drops in occasionally to give Kamrauch a hand, their friendship either a tether to the light or an increasingly unwelcome reminder of the life she once knew. She can't decide which.
