Kamrauch - chief detective, oni mage
Kamrauch's full name is Kamrauch Taniel El'oroniel, although the only people that use it are the tax collectors. To everyone else he's Kamrauch the Oni, hazard-class mage and half of Onisan Investigations.
An Oni's not something you're ever likely to see unless you're in the habit of having your cornflakes with bourbon or someone's just hit you over the head. To most people they are mythical half-human beasts — fierce protectors — guardians of the gates to the Otherworld.
Kamrauch's heard that story and he's not buying it. But neither has he ever met another of his kind. Orphaned as an infant, he was adopted by an elven sorcerer who raised him to win a bet that he could turn this demon child into a cultured member of Solinari society and a mage like himself. Kamrauch is grateful for the gift of magic. But he doesn't write home much.
And just because he can whip up a fairly decent Poissons Crus au Vin ala Elven without looking up the recipe doesn't mean Kamrauch's lost his heritage or his essential nature. Just how far down the civilized veneer goes is anyone's guess. One thing's for sure, though, and that's there is much of the protector in him still, and underneath the wise-cracking and the sarcasm, when its late and he's tired and the night stars are just a little blurry from the last mouthful in the bottle, you can almost hear the strong, steady heartbeat of someone who truly believes there isn't anyone that doesn't deserve a second chance.
